Born in Quetta on June 16, 1956 to Major and Mrs Muhammad Sharif, newly-appointed army chief Raheel Sharif grew up steeped in the military tradition.

Sharif’s elder brother, Shabbir Sharif, was a course-mate of General (rtd) Pervez Musharraf, and was killed during the 1971 war with India and was awarded the Nishan-i-Haider, Pakistan's highest military award.

He attained his formal education at Government College Lahore and later went on to attend the Pakistan Military Academy.On Nov 27, the government approved Sharif’s appointment for the slot of Chief of Army Staff, a position that he will be taking over from Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who will be stepping down on Nov 29 after serving as military chief for six years.

The general is married with two sons and a daughter.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday gave the go-ahead for Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani to be appointed the next Chief Justice of Pakistan, Express News reported.

The current Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is set to retire from his post on December 12.

Tassaduq Hussain Jillani – nicknamed “the gentleman judge” for his mild manner – is expected to maintain the court’s focus on rights but steer clear of intervening in government policy.

Currently, Justice Jillani also occupies the post of Chief Election Commissioner besides being the senior most judge

Militant attacks, US drone strikes, Pakistani military operations, and suicide bombings are daily dangers for civilians in northwest Pakistan. The Center’s interviews with civilians have highlighted an inconsistent, and often inadequate, response to civilian harm in Pakistan by all warring parties.

Since beginning our work in Pakistan in 2009, the Center has monitored incidents of civilian harm, what kind of help civilians want and need, what support currently exists, and what existing infrastructure needs to be improved. Much of this research was published in a groundbreaking report in 2010, including recommendations to the Pakistani Government, the US Government, the UN, stakeholders, and donor nations. We also pressed the US Congress to create a fund in Pakistan to aid war victims, which was allocated $10 million in FY10.

The Center continues to monitor the situation, track compensation, and highlight the plight of civilians affected by the conflict. We are currently partnering with Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Clinic to produce a comprehensive report analyzing covert US drone operations and their impact on the Pakistani civilians.
